Recently, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon gave an interview. During the conversation, a Collider journalist noted that some time has passed since the release of MK 1, which came out in 2023, and many are eagerly awaiting the studio's next project.
He asked the developer: "Can you tease anything? Will it be another Mortal Kombat installment, or Injustice 3, or something completely new?"
Ed Boon confirmed work on a new installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise, and also mentioned that the studio has other projects planned — not just games:
I wish I could tease something. But if I did and revealed everything, I'd probably be in trouble. However, we are definitely working on a new Mortal Kombat game, and not only that — we have several projects in development at once, not just games, but also in other formats. So there are many interesting announcements ahead.
Earlier, there were rumors that the next project from NetherRealm Studio could be the superhero fighting game Injustice 3. There have been no official announcements yet, but Ed Boon's answer gives fans hope for the return of this fighting franchise as well.
