Recently, modder Justin Marshall spoke about his major technical achievement — he managed to integrate DirectX 12 and DXR into the official DOOM 3 level editor. Now he has published demo gameplay of the shooter with path tracing online.

The tech enthusiast explained that DOOM 3 runs through IceBridge — his Direct3D 12 rendering layer, which "brings modern GPU capabilities to classic idTech 4 rendering while preserving the dark industrial atmosphere of the original game":

The modder clarified that in this video, he shows the game rendered with Direct3D 12 and path tracing. This allows for improved graphics without the need to "rebuild" the game's art style:

In this demonstration, DOOM 3 is rendered using Direct3D 12 and path tracing, with final gathering and global illumination. This adds richer lighting, more natural shadows, improved reflections, and a deeper sense of atmosphere — without the need to rebuild the game's original art style. The goal is not to erase Doom 3's classic visual style, but to enhance it with modern rendering techniques, preserving the mood that made the original so iconic.
