2K and Firaxis Games confirmed that a free update, Test of Time, will be available in the game on May 19, 2026. It is expected to significantly impact the perception of the project, as it reworks key systems.
The main change is the ability to lead one civilization throughout the entire game. Previously, players were forced to change nations when transitioning between eras; now, they can either continue development or switch civilizations. The AI will adapt to the player's choice.
The victory system has also been reworked. From the very beginning of the game, players can pursue military, economic, cultural, or scientific victory. Progress now starts as early as ancient times, and in some cases, victory can even be achieved in the age of exploration.
Firaxis is removing the Legacy Paths system and replacing it with Triumphs — a set of additional challenging goals related to six development directions: military, cultural, scientific, economic, diplomatic, and expansionist.
The Test of Time update looks like an attempt to relaunch Civilization VII. The studio is clearly relying on player feedback and reworking controversial elements.
