Are PS6 and Xbox in Need of Disc Drives? Capcom Data Shows the End of Physical Games

Capcom has published a new financial report confirming the near-complete dominance of digital distribution in the gaming market.

According to rumors, PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix may be released without built-in disc drives. This would allow for a lower console price, and players could purchase an external drive if needed.

New data from Capcom shows that such a scenario is becoming increasingly likely. In the last quarter, the company sold 59 million copies of games, and 93% of them were digital sales.

This means that only 7% of sales were physical versions. Even considering digital Game-Key Cards for Nintendo Switch 2, the advantage of the digital format remains overwhelming.

This data has reignited the discussion about the future of physical editions. Players still talk about their attachment to physical boxes, but statistics from major publishers show a steady trend — the next console generation may finally transition to a digital model.
