In May, Star Citizen fans noticed that the amount collected for development exceeded one billion dollars. Cloud Imperium Games sells various support packs and ships for hundreds of dollars, and those who invest a particularly large sum can receive a special status and a luxurious 600i Executive Edition ship.
StuartGT posted a screenshot of the fundraising page in the Star Citizen community and started a discussion.
Fans joke that the collected funds will go to buy some yacht, not to develop the space sim, and players will receive a congratulatory video on YouTube.
User TimHortonsMagician joined the discussion and said that he donated to the development back in 2015. He doesn't think the billion-dollar milestone should be celebrated – he would just like the developers to finally finish the game.
QuarrosN expressed the opinion: "This only means one thing... We are crazy...", and PN4HIRE supported "Yes, certified".
loliconest believes that what is happening is the result of Star Citizen having no competitors.
Cloud Imperium Games has been developing Star Citizen for many years, but the authors are not yet ready to announce the exact release date for the full version 1.0. First, they want to release the single-player campaign Squadron 42.
Initially, it was supposed to be released by the end of this year, but a delay is not ruled out. Earlier, game director Chris Roberts said in an interview:
Our plan is to [release Squadron 42] by the end of this year, but there is one factor in the industry that we, like everyone else, have to pay attention to, so I cannot guarantee it 100% [referring to the release of GTA VI]. After that, we will prepare for the release of [Star Citizen 1.0].
