Recently, modder Justin Marshall presented a new development diary for "DOOM RTX" – he is creating an RTX remaster of the DOOM 3 shooter using various modern technologies.
In the May video, he invites players to evaluate the graphics with path tracing, improved global illumination, particles with path tracing illumination, screen decal overlay in the style of idTech 5, POM relief mapping, and support for launching content from the DOOM 3 alpha version / E3 build.
DOOM 3 runs through IceBridge – a compatibility and rendering modernization layer for older engines. The developer explained that it allows porting outdated rendering pipelines to modern graphics APIs, such as Direct3D 12, while providing access to features including: ray/path tracing, global illumination, improved reflections, denoising, modern GPU-oriented rendering technologies, and more.
Justin Marshall emphasizes that he does not aim to "erase the classic visual style of DOOM 3," but his goal is to "enhance it with modern rendering technologies, preserving the atmosphere, darkness, contrast, and oppressive mood that made the original game iconic."
Justin Marshall's video is available at the following link. There is no specific release date for the DOOM 3 RTX remaster yet.
