Hackers attack GTA VI fans - offer fake beta invitations and keys, and upload viruses
Those eager to play GTA VI earlier than others are falling victim to cybercriminals.
For many, Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated game of 2026. Various scammers are taking advantage of the interest in Rockstar Games' new installment of the franchise.
Cybersecurity experts have noted a sharp increase in phishing and malicious campaigns related to GTA VI. Notably, fans recently marked the "anniversary" of the unreleased game – before the postponement, GTA VI was expected to be released on May 26.
Users who decide to take a chance and play GTA VI earlier than others risk handing over their personal data and more to hackers/scammers.
Technical Director Marius Briedis explained that due to the current level of hype around GTA VI, players are particularly vulnerable:
GTA VI is one of the most anticipated games in the history of the industry, and it's precisely this level of hype that attracts criminals. When people are desperate to get early access to something, their vigilance decreases. This is the window of opportunity that attackers exploit.
On fraudulent websites, victims are promised exclusive beta keys for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S: they are asked to fill out a short form and pass a fake bot verification, after which they are offered to subscribe to paid services or download potentially malicious applications "to participate in the beta".
Hackers also create fake websites with pirated games, disguised as popular resources. Those who want to "download GTA VI for free" on PC or a mobile version of the game (a fake "GTA 6 Beta" app has appeared) end up getting viruses on their devices.
Experts recommend being skeptical of GTA VI beta offers, avoiding downloading "game clients" from third-party sites, and checking URLs.
The official release of Grand Theft Auto VI is expected this November on consoles. Take-Two / Rockstar Games have not yet announced the PC version's release date.
