Santa Monica Studio recently announced God of War Laufey. The rumors circulating online were confirmed — this game will not be about Kratos, but about the adventures of his wife:

Usually, death is the end of everything, but for the warrior Laufey (Faye), Kratos's wife, a whole new adventure began after her death. Suddenly coming to herself after death in a strange place, Faye learns that the protection she prepared for Kratos and Atreus is now under threat.

Many players were not impressed by the prospect of playing not as the beloved hero of previous God of War installments — Kratos, but as a woman. The decision by the creators of GoW Laufey was actively criticized online.

In an interview with GameSpot, game director Ariel Lawrence commented on the situation regarding the gaming community's reaction to the new game's announcement:

I'm so grateful that we have fans like that. I'm so grateful that we have people who care. And whether they're excited, or they're upset, or they think we should do something different — I would still rather them care.

For Santa Monica Studios, Lawrence explained, criticism acts as a kind of motivation — the developers want to prove that Faye's story is worthy of players' attention:

We're ready to show [players] Faye's journey and give them the opportunity to love her as much as we do. That's what's most exciting for us.

God of War Laufey is planned for release on PlayStation 5.
