Recently, fighters against “AI slop” in video games opened a new front. This time, the creators of War Thunder were under attack.

Players noticed the donation packs and had suspicions about the use of AI. Leniwcowaty and other members of the War Thunder community expressed the opinion that the vehicle designs use art generated by artificial intelligence:

How do we feel about Gaijin including “AI slop” in $70 packs?

Blogger TheCodMineMan enlarged the image and pointed out that in the corner of one of these suspicious arts, a logo strongly resembling Gemini — Google's AI — can be seen.

Soon, Gaijin reacted to the complaints from War Thunder fans and stated that the studio prohibits the use of generative AI for vehicle textures in games. It is emphasized that this prohibition is stipulated in contracts with outsourcing partners.

After an investigation, the developers found that one of the outsourcing teams assisting War Thunder authors with vehicle models and textures did indeed use GenAI when preparing some materials:

This was done without approval, and unfortunately, our internal quality control system did not detect the problem in time. We are now reviewing all work performed by this team and reconsidering further cooperation with them. In addition, we are strengthening quality control procedures to reduce the risk of such incidents recurring in the future.

The developers thoroughly analyzed several cases that War Thunder fans complained about. Sometimes traces of Gemini were indeed present, but in the case of the Yak-130, the situation is different.

A symbol resembling the Gemini logo can be seen on the aircraft's fuselage, but this design element was actually taken from real photographs:

Similar symbols can be seen on many real Yak-130 aircraft, as well as on other Russian military aviation equipment. So this part of the texture reproduces real reference material, and is not generated by AI.
