At the “XBOX Games Showcase 2026” presentation, rumors about the console exclusivity of the shooter Gears of War: E-Day were confirmed.
Players noticed a podcast by journalist Jeff Gerstmann, who discussed these rumors shortly before the show began.
He mentioned that he “heard” from sources that the potentially poor results of the new Gears of War installment are being used to justify abandoning Xbox exclusives:
I heard yesterday that someone floated the idea that Gears would no longer be coming to PlayStation, but it was framed in a way, like they're doing it on purpose, so that when [Gears of War: E-Day] fails, they'll have plenty of reasons to just keep releasing their games on PlayStation. Sending Gears “to its death” sounds like a pretty desperate move. I don't really understand… It sounds extremely crazy. But I think Microsoft is in a very strange position right now, and they're acting pretty crazy, so I don't even know.
The journalist noted that PEGI ratings mentioning a PS5 version have already appeared, so the decision to cancel the release of Gears of War: E-Day on PS5 was made at the last minute:
And here's the thing: if Gears of War doesn't come out on PlayStation, that has to be a decision literally made in the last, like, 18 hours, or last week, because the PEGI ratings just came out — with a rating for all platforms: PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 […] The question is: will they delay the PlayStation 5 version [Gears of War: E-Day] instead of canceling it entirely?
Jeff Gerstmann suggests that at some point, Gears of War: E-Day will still be released on PS5, when others have “had their fill”:
Because otherwise it would look, I don't know, like irresponsible: you have all the work already done, and you just took and canceled [the PS5 version of the game] for some strange reason. I don't even know, it all sounds very strange.
Another well-known insider, Jeff Grubb, stated that the shooter's version for the Sony console was practically ready for release: “so, essentially, an almost ready version of Gears for PlayStation is just sitting on someone's drive.”
