TMNT: The Last Ronin is inspired by God of War and Ghost of Tsushima

An updated version of TMNT: The Last Ronin was shown at Summer Game Fest 2026. Since its announcement in 2023, the project has undergone significant changes: development was taken from Black Forest Games and transferred to PlatinumGames, known for NieR: Automata and Bayonetta 3.

The game is based on the dark comic The Last Ronin and tells the story of the last surviving Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. The hero single-handedly confronts the Foot Clan and New York, which is ruled by Shredder's grandson.

PlatinumGames is responsible for the combat system, so the developers promise dynamic battles. At the same time, great attention is paid to the plot. Project lead Yohei Shimbori, who previously worked on Tekken 8, wanted to create a more mature and emotional story, so Western screenwriters were brought in for development.

Paramount Vice President of Creative Affairs Shawn Kittelsen, known for Mortal Kombat 11, is working on the script. New narrative director Mike Rogers is also part of the team.

According to the developers, the main sources of inspiration for the story were the modern God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and Ghost of Yotei. The authors want to combine dynamic Japanese action with a cinematic and emotional story.
