Interest in the remakes is fueled by the involvement of one of Baldur's Gate 2's lead co-creators. While developers have not yet revealed details or the extent of changes, the news of the classic RPGs' return has become one of the most discussed topics in the community.
The main debates revolve around the combat system. Journalists, including the editorial team at PC Gamer, are calling for a departure from the real-time with active pause (RTWP) mechanic and a shift to turn-based combat, following the example of Baldur's Gate 3 by Larian Studios.
Proponents of this approach believe that turn-based combat better conveys the spirit of tabletop Dungeons & Dragons and allows for a deeper exploration of tactical elements. They also cite surveys, according to which about 75% of players prefer this format.
However, classic fans fear that abandoning RTWP will strip the originals of their unique character. At the same time, proponents of changes remind that the original versions and Enhanced Editions will not disappear, and a remake should offer not only updated graphics but also a new gameplay experience.
