Capcom and Sony, in a new interview, explained why this project was chosen to showcase the console's new capabilities.
According to Sony, the decision was deliberate: Resident Evil Requiem was considered one of the most anticipated next-gen projects, making it ideal for demonstrating the advantages of PSSR. The company clarified that after negotiations with Capcom, the technology's implementation was accelerated to be ready for the game's release.
PSSR is an AI-based image reconstruction system used in PS5 Pro. It enhances graphics quality and detail without significant hardware strain. Sony notes that the new version of the technology was created as part of Project Amethyst, which is being developed jointly with AMD.
Capcom added that PS5 Pro played a crucial role in the visual realization of Resident Evil Requiem. Developers highlight improved ray tracing, higher rendering performance, and advanced upscaling. This allowed achieving a level of detail previously unavailable to the series.
Capcom also reworked the hair simulation system: now strands look more natural and react more realistically to movement. Changes also affected the character skin models, making the difference between young Grace and experienced Leon more pronounced.
Sony particularly highlights the opening scene in the city, where the capabilities of PSSR, detail density, and lighting quality are best observed. According to the company, this is one of the best examples of next-gen graphics on consoles.
