Creator of the universe George Miller is looking for new partners to create the final "Mad Max" film and TV series, after which he plans to sell the rights to the franchise.

The 81-year-old director is actively negotiating with major market players, including Amazon, Universal, and Sony Pictures. According to the industry publication Puck, the franchise's long-time partner, Warner Bros. studio, has officially refused to participate in the development of Miller's new projects.

It is clear that the decision of Warner Bros. bosses is directly related to the weak box office performance of the recent prequel. "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," released in spring 2024, earned only $174 million worldwide against a production budget of $168 million, resulting in significant losses for the studio.

Most likely, that "final film" should be the project under the working title "Mad Max: The Wasteland." The script for the film, which tells about the events that happened to Max Rockatansky a year before "Fury Road," has long been written.

However, Tom Hardy's return to the iconic role remains highly questionable. In the summer of 2024, amidst the weak box office of "Furiosa," the actor was quite pessimistic about the chances of the film going into production, succinctly stating: "I don't think it's going to happen."
