Saros is just the beginning. Housemarque grows within PlayStation
After the release of Saros, Housemarque strengthens its position within PlayStation Studios and is already planning new projects. The Finnish team is expanding and continues to develop its philosophy of action games, despite acknowledging that this format is not suitable for all players.
Co-founder and studio head Ilari Kuittinen and brand manager Mikael Haveri confirmed in an interview that Saros received a positive reception. According to them, the game not only helps to strengthen the team's confidence but also attracts new developers who share the studio's approach. Housemarque currently has about 120 employees, plus support from other PlayStation teams.
We attract people who understand our sensitivity to design and the goals we want to achieve. There are people who question our approach… “You don't have a thousand people.” There are always cultural conflicts. We try to stick to the essence, where gameplay comes first. Half of the team was not with us during Returnal. A lot of discussions, but we remain true to our values.
A lot is happening that we didn't realize. For example, the help we receive from different departments of the organization, and we definitely appreciated that in the case of this game, which allowed us to establish more direct relationships.
We are here [in California], and our teammates from the best teams in the world welcome us, congratulate us, and praise the game. It's amazing to go from Super Stardust, which started as a small studio of 10-12 people in 1997, to where we are now.
The studio emphasizes that thanks to Sony's support, it feels more freedom and is ready to make not only sequels but also new original projects.
