God of War Laufey will not be the first game in the franchise to use Egyptian mythology
Santa Monica Studio is preparing to bring the God of War series to the world of Egyptian mythology for the first time. Hints of this direction have long appeared in the franchise's games.
Players who became familiar with the series after the 2018 reboot might not have noticed that the developers had long been leading the story towards a journey to North Africa. Traces of Egyptian culture and deities were found in almost all parts of the series.
Even in the first God of War in 2005, Egyptian hieroglyphs could be seen on the walls of the Port of Athens. Later, in Ascension, there were records of a traveler from the “Land of Pharaohs,” and in the comics connecting the old and new sagas, Kratos visited the Egyptian deserts and met the god of wisdom, Thoth.
In recent games, the references have become more explicit. Kratos and Atreus found Egyptian artifacts in Tyr's Temple, including the Eye of Ra and a pharaoh's crown, hinting at the god of war's travels to these lands.
In the Valhalla expansion, Tyr used an Egyptian khopesh sword in combat. In God of War: Laufey, these details are expected to become part of a full-fledged story dedicated to the Egyptian pantheon.
