"It's scribbles!": Medical student criticized Resident Evil creators for displaying health as an electrocardiogram
It turned out stylish, but not very accurate from a medical point of view.
The creators of Resident Evil decided to use an "ECG display" to show health: green signals the player that their character is fine, yellow warns of danger, and red clearly indicates that the situation is critical and something needs to be done.
However, if we consider such an indicator from a medical point of view, the visualization of "heartbeat" in the Resident Evil franchise games was not done very correctly. A medical student recently drew gamers' attention with her analysis of several games.
According to the girl, in the first Resident Evil, players are shown "just scribbles and zigzags." She admits that Capcom might have tried to visualize the QRS complex (cardiac cycle, "waves" on the electrocardiogram) this way, but it "looks strange."
Other parts of the franchise also got their share of criticism:
- Resident Evil Remake: "This [electrocardiogram] really looks strange: it's presented backward. All over the world, the standard is that an ECG is written from left to right [but here it's right to left]. It looks more like a lie detector, although this image is closer to a real ECG, but the curve is too sharp."
- Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remakes: "[Electrocardiograms] are quite close to reality. The only thing is: there are two graphs here, but it looks like they should depict the QRS complex. There are three waves between the QRS complexes, which is incorrect. The T wave is very large, which indicates an excess of potassium, but the U wave, on the contrary, indicates its deficiency. Leon urgently needs help."
- Resident Evil 9: "This doesn't look like the truth at all. It's more like audio visualization. I don't even understand what it is."
- Resident Evil 0, RE 2, RE 3, and also RE Code: Veronica: "These are just scribbles, I can't even recognize anything here - it means nothing at all."
