Following the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders, confusion has arisen online due to digital activation codes that may have regional restrictions in the PS5 versions.
A number of major retailers, including Amazon and GAME, have posted warnings that copies of the game purchased in a specific country will only work on accounts registered in that same country. For example, a code from the UK will not activate outside of it.
Such information caused a stir in the EU, where rules against geo-blocking of digital goods between member states are in effect.
However, in Germany and Spain, store pages indicate different conditions – standard activation across Europe, and in France and a number of German retailers, there are no restrictions at all. It is also reported that similar warnings have begun to disappear for Xbox versions, where regional barriers are usually not used.
