In an interview, engineers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat discussed the possible update frequency of future Steam Machine models.
According to Griffais, the Steam Machine's lifecycle will not necessarily be as long as the Steam Deck's. For comparison, about four years have passed since the Steam Deck's release. He noted that Valve approaches the devices differently: Steam Deck is perceived as a console, while Steam Machine is more like a gaming PC. Due to the huge variety of CPU and GPU configurations in the PC segment, the performance requirements for Steam Machine are less stringent.
The engineers clarified that Steam Machine 2 is not currently under development and an announcement is not planned in the near future. The timing of a future version's release could be affected by RAM shortages and a slowdown in the gaming PC update cycle.
Aldehayyat added that longer PC update cycles in general could extend the life of the current Steam Machine. He also noted that the requirements of new games on Steam could accelerate device updates.
