Insider Moore's Law is Dead explained why Sony decided to abandon physical game releases. According to him, the main reason is the rising cost of components and an attempt to keep the PS6 price below $1000.
He claims that Sony faced the risk of entering into unfavorable contracts for RAM supply. Because of this, the company would have to sell the PS6 at a loss at launch, hoping to offset costs through more expensive games.
According to Moore's Law is Dead, this is why Sony decided to stop releasing games on discs starting in January 2028. A full transition to digital distribution will give the company more control over prices and allow it to increase revenue through the PlayStation Store.
The insider added that employees of studios closely collaborating with Sony were shocked by the decision. He also urged players to actively criticize the company, believing that only public pressure can force it to change its plans.
As examples, he cited the PC community's reaction to NVIDIA DLSS 5 and criticism of AMD's FSR 4 policy, stating that in both cases, user dissatisfaction forced the companies to reconsider their decisions.
