Lords of the Fallen II Creator Explains Reason for Imminent Disk Abandonment

CI Games CEO Marek Tymiński believes that Rockstar and PlayStation's decisions to abandon disks could trigger a sharp decline in physical game editions in 2027, although Lords of the Fallen 2 will still be released on disk.

CI Games CEO Marek Tymiński believes that publishers may start abandoning physical editions as early as 2027. In his opinion, this will be facilitated by Rockstar Games' decision to release GTA VI in boxes without a disk and PlayStation's plans to stop producing new games on physical media from 2028.

The release of GTA 6 without a disk seems unfair to studios that still support physical editions, and only accelerates this transition. Sony's decision to stop supporting disks from 2028 could lead to a sharp decline in physical releases as early as 2027 or even sooner.

Tymiński noted that physical editions bring significantly less profit to studios. According to his calculations, for a game priced at $69.99, the developer receives just over $26 from each copy sold, while a digital version can bring in about $49.

CI Games still plans to release Lords of the Fallen II on disk.

We still plan to release Lords of the Fallen 2 on disk, although from a business perspective, it's becoming increasingly difficult to justify such a decision when physical sales account for less than 20% of the market, especially after recent events.
