It recently became known about a new round of layoffs at Xbox. The cuts also affected Obsidian Entertainment, which previously released projects such as Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2.

Writer and game designer Chris Avellone noticed the news and decided to speak out on social media:

Well, layoffs did happen at Obsidian. Good job, Microsoft.

User iAmJoshuaGraham joined the discussion, noting that the layoffs were an "expected" outcome, given the results of the studio's recent projects.

During further discussion, Avellone stated:

I'm willing to bet Avowed 2 wasn't canceled — development is too far along.

When Chris Avellone was asked if he thought Asha Sharma might still cancel Avowed 2 and move Obsidian to developing a new Fallout, he replied:

If Avowed 2 is indeed in an advanced stage of development, I doubt she would cancel it, but I'm not the one making the decisions.

Earlier in June, when rumors of new Xbox layoffs began to spread, Chris Avellone expressed the opinion that the failure of The Outer Worlds 2 was Microsoft's fault — it was Microsoft that determined the pricing policy, and its decision "definitely hurt sales."
