Recently, a Half-Life franchise fan under the nickname Electronic-Use905 drew attention to the portfolio of one of Valve's current employees. Level designer Chuck Wilson, several years ago, even before joining the company, created a remake of one of HL2's locations.
He recreated Ravenholm on the Source 2 engine. In the description, he explained that the goal of his project was to understand how the editor works, as well as to delve into the levels that Valve released to better understand their structure. And then create something new based on the acquired knowledge:
The beginning of the Ravenholm segment seemed like an appropriate scale project to tackle. I started by loading Ravenholm, taking many screenshots of the starting area, and re-experiencing its visual style, atmosphere, and scale. Based on these references, I was able to determine the scale and re-block out the geometry using Hammer 2's modeling tools. Once the entire scene was roughly assembled, I decided to make some compositional changes to better guide the player towards the zombies and the ominously lit cabin with a circular saw. After adjusting the composition, I moved on to detailing and exploring the new possibilities offered by Hammer 2.
Some participants in the discussion praised the Source 2 engine for its high-quality lighting — some would like to see a "Half-Life 2 Source 2" remake in the spirit of Black Mesa.
