Ubisoft responded on Steam to complaints about microtransactions that are more expensive than the game itself, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced

The release of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced on PC via Steam did not go smoothly. Some players are actively criticizing Ubisoft for tying the game to its services and for its monetization.

After the remake of AC IV was released, various premium add-ons totaling $85 appeared — the base version of the game and even the Deluxe edition are cheaper ($60 and $70 respectively).

Players can purchase clothing and equipment sets for the main character Edward Kenway, a ship decoration kit — which includes sails, crew outfits, a ship pet, a helm, a figurehead, and a hull. In addition, a Map Pack DLC is available to reveal collectibles: "use a special spyglass to instantly unlock rare collectibles on the world map."

One community member complained about the company's policy in a negative Steam review and stated that he intended to get a refund for the game:

Come on, Ubisoft, you couldn't hold back at all, could you?! You release a game for 70 euros and ON RELEASE DAY you push 85 euros worth of DLC on us, and it's not just cosmetics, it gives a gameplay advantage. This is why piracy exists, I'm getting a refund!

A Ubisoft representative responded to this review and explained that the base version of the game includes all content, and the add-ons are "optional bonuses" — they are not necessary to buy, and you can enjoy the game without them:

[…] We want to clarify one point: the standard edition is a complete and finished gaming experience. All missions, all islands, the entire story, and the entire game world are fully accessible, nothing is cut. Additional packs are completely optional bonuses for those who wish to purchase them; they are not required to enjoy the game or to complete it.
