Denuvo Removal Led to Worse Performance in DOOM: The Dark Ages

In July, an update and a story expansion called Revelations were released for the shooter DOOM: The Dark Ages. Players also noticed that Denuvo protection was removed from the PC version.

There is an opinion that this DRM degrades performance, but in the case of this game, something went wrong. The abandonment of resource-intensive protection algorithms, apparently, led to the opposite effect: in a recent test, DOOM: The Dark Ages performed worse than the version with Denuvo.

Gamegpu ran the game on a PC with an RTX 5090 graphics card and compared the results with previous tests. At a resolution of 3840x2160 with path tracing at maximum Ultra Nightmare graphics settings, "the removal of protection did not bring the expected improvements" — performance remained at the same level, i.e., "exactly 30 FPS."

It is noted that the minimum frame rate indicators of DOOM: The Dark Ages decreased after Denuvo was removed. In the previous version with the built-in protection system, the minimum FPS was at 27 frames, while in the current build, it dropped to 24 frames in demanding scenes.
