Mexican officials believe that the company's actions may violate the law. Deputy Irais Reyes and Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio announced that they would file a complaint with the Mexican antitrust authority.
Reyes, who is called the "defender of gamers" in Mexico, claims that Sony is acting like a monopolist, trying to limit competition.
If discs disappear, PlayStation console owners will no longer be able to choose where to buy games and will be forced to purchase them directly through the store owned by Sony.
Senator Colosio noted that the abandonment of physical editions would harm stores and the used games market.
Stores like Sanborns or GamePlanet will no longer be able to compete on prices by selling games, and the huge market for used games and exchanges will simply disappear (...) Consumers will stop truly owning games. With digital distribution, you only buy a digital license, and access to content is entirely dependent on the publisher's terms.
Earlier, Sony's initiative was also criticized by a French presidential candidate, who stated that he would address this issue in 2027.
