Currently, Gearbox Software is developing the looter-shooter Borderlands 4. Free updates and premium content are being released for the game. However, there are rumors that another project in the franchise may appear in the foreseeable future – a remake of the first installment.
A post by blogger Trance went viral in the Borderlands community. He specializes in Destiny content, but recently published a post about alleged negotiations between Sony and Bungie with Gearbox.
Allegedly, Bungie might be tasked with remaking Borderlands. It is claimed that they want to remake the game in the spirit of Destiny.
I was informed that the project was presented as an open-world game, similar to Borderlands 4, with seasonal paid content, as well as plans to abandon traditional main characters in favor of customizable protagonists – similar to the systems in Destiny and Borderlands 4. If the deal goes through, Gearbox will also develop a Borderlands 2 remake as a timed exclusive for PlayStation 6. Source: a colleague working at 2K.
However, there's a catch: many players mistakenly took it as an "inside scoop" from Trance himself. In reality, the blogger simply quoted a message from the 4chan forum in its entirety. The part with the "source" in his post was also taken from the original post. He later published a link to the post in the comments, but not everyone noticed.
Truthful leaks sometimes appear on 4chan, but often they are fabrications by self-proclaimed insiders. Therefore, it is highly probable that the "Borderlands remake" is a figment of an anonymous prankster's imagination.
Earlier this year, Bungie launched a new extraction-shooter Marathon and released the final update for Destiny 2. It also became known in the summer about a new round of layoffs at the studio.
