Recently, a post from one of the Steam Machine owners went viral. The gamer reported that about 20 minutes after launching the device, the "red line of death" lit up, and then the system stopped booting (it later turned out that this was not a physical malfunction — there were BIOS issues).
Players continued to discuss this Steam Machine indicator and noticed another problem. The device can falsely report overheating. Valve responded to the reports: the company's engineers studied this problem and explained that there is a bug in the current BIOS version that causes the indicator (red LEDs) to light up earlier than it should.
According to Valve, work is currently underway on a BIOS update. Its release is expected "soon," and this update will fix the "red line" display issue. The activation threshold will be raised to 100/100 degrees for the CPU and GPU instead of the current 95/90 degrees.
This change is intended to solve the problem of false indicator triggers; the Steam Machine will still reduce performance when the temperature reaches 100 degrees.
