The Witcher 3 Game Director Explained Why Delaying New PlayStation and Xbox is Beneficial for Developers

The game director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to give interviews. Recently, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who is currently developing the vampire action RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, spoke about the new generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

In his opinion, delaying their launch and extending the life cycle of the current Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 is beneficial for developers — they don't have to deal with the specifics of new hardware and support several more game builds:

Any new platform is always a new challenge: you need to study it, understand the limitations, what you can and cannot do. And besides, it's an additional build that needs to be created and then maintained.

With the release of new consoles, developers face additional tasks to support two more versions (Xbox and PlayStation):

When the next generation [of consoles] comes out — you add two more builds, and the amount of work increases. This sounds simple, but you need to understand that there is a team of testers who need to check each platform separately — not only specific changes, but also that the entire game does not contain critical bugs; to make sure that it can be played from beginning to end, etc. This is, frankly, a huge amount of work, and if we work with current consoles, it's easier because we know how many builds we have, and they are easier to manage.
