NieR: Automata Creator Criticizes a Future Without Disc Games

News 0

NieR series creator Yoko Taro commented on PlayStation's decision to stop releasing games on physical media. The developer does not hide his disappointment.

Earlier, Taro showed the physical edition of Hi-Fi Rush on social media and urged players not to take discs for granted. In his opinion, those who value boxed versions should buy them while such an opportunity exists.

Later, the developer elaborated on the situation:

Personally, I am very sad that physical media is disappearing, but perhaps this is just the course of history. The very fact that we have control over physical distribution can be considered an advantage compared to platforms like Steam. Therefore, I thought that even if digital distribution were promoted, a future would come where only expensive collector's editions would be available physically (as in the case of CD distribution). It's a pity I was wrong.

Yoko Taro believes that discs could continue to exist at least in the form of collector's editions. According to him, Sony's new approach raises doubts among players and developers.
