RuneScape: Dragonwilds surprised developers. Early access game brought impressive sales
The survival game RuneScape: Dragonwilds has sold over 1.3 million copies in early access.
Jagex Studio announced that early access sales of RuneScape: Dragonwilds have exceeded 1.3 million copies, surpassing developers' expectations.
Jagex CEO Job Bellamy told The Game Business that the team initially expected to sell around 200,000 copies in early access. According to him, this result was unexpected. One of the reasons for the success was the game's high popularity among players from East Asia, although the developers believed that the project would be better received by Western users.
Bellamy noted that the Chinese market played a particularly important role. The success of Dragonwilds, he said, disproved some "long-standing doubts about cultural compatibility" and helped the team move more confidently towards a full release.
The game also showed a strong start: 600,000 copies were sold in the first two weeks after its early access release. Sales continue to grow steadily, and an active community has formed around the project. Developers continue to evolve the game and add new content before the final version is released.
