Study on PS5 Disc Lifespan Sparks Criticism. Gamers Disbelieve

News 5

Debates have erupted online regarding the future of physical PlayStation games. The cause was reports about the alleged lifespan of Blu-ray discs used on PS4 and PS5.

According to the Canadian Conservation Institute, pressed Blu-ray discs may remain functional for about 10-20 years due to gradual material degradation. It is noted that these media have a thin data storage layer, so it is important to protect them from damage.

However, it is not yet possible to confirm these estimates in practice. Blu-ray technology has not existed long enough to test such predictions on a large number of discs stored under various conditions.

The discussion coincided with ongoing debates about the future of physical PlayStation editions. Some social media users considered the publications an attempt to present digital distribution as a more reliable alternative.

Comments like "you're lying" even appeared, and players began posting photos of their game collections for PS2, PS3, and other old consoles, claiming that their discs still work decades later.

The durability of optical media depends on manufacturing quality, storage conditions, and usage, so talking about a single "shelf life" for all discs would be an oversimplification.
