Sony patented an unusual DualSense without physical buttons

News 2

Sony continues to explore ideas for PlayStation's digital future. Following rumors of a possible abandonment of physical media, a new patent has emerged describing a controller concept for the PS6.

The main change will be the rejection of traditional buttons, D-pad, and analog sticks. The front of the gamepad could turn into a large touch surface with virtual controls.

This approach would allow players to independently change the position, size, and shape of buttons to suit their preferences or game genre. Different control schemes could be created for shooters, racing games, or fighting games.

Sony also wants to solve the problem of accidental presses. The controller will be able to use pressure and temperature sensors to understand whether the player is intentionally touching the surface.

The patent also describes an automatic owner recognition system. After the user picks up the controller, the device will be able to load their profile, settings, and personal layout.

The patent does not guarantee that such a DualSense will ever be available for purchase.
