It seems that new Dragon Age games are not to be expected in the foreseeable future. This is according to the former executive producer of the franchise. And it's not just about the failure of the latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but also about management.
Mark Darrah recently participated in the FRVR podcast and spoke about how, with the current management structure, it's difficult to imagine launching the development of a new game — it's not entirely clear who is responsible for which franchise. As a result, a situation can arise where several managers believe they should be responsible for a specific franchise:
From what I've heard, if you come in and decide to make a game for a certain franchise... by the time you're almost ready to start, suddenly several people appear out of nowhere who believe they control that franchise, and essentially tear you apart, grind you up, and spit you out.
Currently, Mark Darrah "has no idea" who could propose creating a new Dragon Age. BioWare studio is currently busy with a new Mass Effect, and it's hard to imagine them taking on another project:
The problem is, I don't know who at BioWare would pitch Dragon Age. So the other option is: someone within EA decides to push Dragon Age, and, as I expect, if they actually try to do that, someone from BioWare will step in and actually become one of those very people who pop out of nowhere to tear that person apart. I suspect that won't happen for a variety of reasons.
However, Darrah admits that after the finalization of the deal to sell EA to Saudi investors, they might push the idea of making a new Dragon Age.
