According to sources from Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, Fable's development has "gone over budget to an uncomfortable level." Given that the RPG has been in development for 7 years, such a situation does not seem unexpected.
Microsoft announced the series reboot in 2020, with the release scheduled for February 2027. Initially, the game was planned for an earlier release but was postponed to give the project "the separate moment it deserves." Now, early access will start the day after God of War Laufey's release – February 17.
It is noted that Playground Games studio had to significantly rework its own ForzaTech engine, originally created for Forza, to adapt it for an open-world RPG.
The question remains how much Fable's sales on PS5 will suffer due to the release of God of War Laufey. It is possible that Microsoft may consider another postponement.
