Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Developers Criticize Sony's Decision to Abandon Discs
The developers of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have commented on Sony's decision to abandon discs by 2028.
Sony's decision to cease physical game releases for PlayStation from 2028 continues to spark heated discussions. Now, the creators of one of 2025's major hits – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – have voiced their opinion.
Sandfall Interactive Game Director Guillaume Broche stated that he finds it difficult to accept this direction of industry development.
Personally, I think it's very sad. I really like game stores. I mostly play on PC now, but many people on our team play on PS5 and love collecting physical editions. It's part of the beauty of art – being able to own something tangible.
The studio's Technical Director, Tom Guillermin, noted that releasing discs requires more costs and limitations, but the team still took this step.
Although everything became more difficult and meant less profit per copy, we wanted to give players the opportunity to have the game in physical form. This is something we value ourselves as players.
According to the developers, discs are a way of distributing games, part of a collection, and an opportunity to preserve the feeling of ownership of a purchased work.
