"We're a little masochistic": Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader developers responded to a hypothetical offer to develop Baldur's Gate 4
Larian Studios itself will not be making Baldur's Gate 4, but some players would like to see a sequel.
In a recent interview, Dragon Age creator Mark Darrah shared his thoughts on what a hypothetical Baldur's Gate 4 could be like. He then expressed the opinion that such a project could be entrusted to a studio like Owlcat Games.
The team has already made a name for itself with several successful cRPG games — Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. While they haven't reached the level of the acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3 by Larian Studios, their projects have still received many positive reviews and are loved by players.
An IGN journalist spoke with Owlcat Games Creative Director Alexander Mishulin and asked if the studio would answer a hypothetical call from Hasbro if they were offered to develop Baldur's Gate 4.
Alexander replied:
First, I want to thank all the players and your [IGN] audience who believe we are capable of this. It's truly a great honor. You've already said that we're a little masochistic. So the answer is "yes," we would take this as a serious challenge!
Alexander Mishulin explained that Larian created its own vision of what a Baldur's Gate sequel should be and presented it to players. Any other studio that takes on BG4 will be making its own game in the Baldur's Gate setting:
It won't be "BG3 by Larian" because Baldur's Gate 3 is Larian's signature formula with all their ideas about the combat system and how they combine it with Dungeons & Dragons, with their vision of co-op and how it fits into a D&D project. So any studio that tries to replicate that is doomed to fail. It just doesn't work that way. Larian has been making such games for 20, or even 30 years — starting with the very first Divinity. This is their view of games, their view of RPGs, and it's a great game. Other studios will do something different — they will have their own DNA, their own ideas, and they will put them into Baldur's Gate 4, and it will be something different. I hope there will be a studio brave, passionate, and skilled enough to make such a game."
When the journalist clarified, "Like Owlcat?", Mishulin replied with a smile, "Thank you."
