DOOM Soundtrack Composer Believes His Music Lives On Thanks to Fans
Mick Gordon admitted that his music's longevity is ensured by the fans themselves, and next year he will perform DOOM compositions live for the first time in a long while.
Composer Mick Gordon, who wrote the music for DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, spoke about his unusual approach to creating soundtracks. According to him, he doesn't compose music from scratch, but rather finds it within the game world itself.
In an interview with GameSpot, Gordon compared his work to that of an archaeologist.
I feel like a musical archaeologist. The music already exists – my task is to carefully discover it, clean it up, and release it into the world.
The composer believes that this is why the DOOM series required such an aggressive, heavy, and uncompromising sound – it perfectly matched the brutal gameplay and the spirit of the franchise.
At the same time, Gordon emphasized that players are primarily responsible for the long life of his music. After completing his work, he hands over the materials to the developers, and then it is the fans who make the compositions popular by including them in playlists, performing them at concerts, and introducing them to new generations of listeners.
Currently, the composer is working on the soundtrack for the cyberpunk shooter Defect, and next year he will perform DOOM music live for the first time in many years at the Radar Festival in the UK.
