The situation is being called one of the brand's biggest reputational crises since the massive PlayStation Network outage in 2011. Gamers fear the disappearance of collectible physical editions, complete dependence on the digital store, and the loss of the ability to resell games on the secondary market. Dissatisfaction is exacerbated by the fact that Sony is effectively ignoring the demands of such a large community.

According to analysts, financial reasons and security concerns are behind the company's rigid stance. Abandoning discs will allow Sony to avoid retail network commissions and reduce the used games market, which is particularly popular in many European countries.
