PS3 emulation on a $100 console? RPCS3 creator believes it's possible

News 2

"I want RPCS3 to run smoothly on retro consoles costing less than $100," said one of the creators of the PlayStation 3 emulator, summarizing the team's current work.

PS3 emulation has been developing rapidly recently. Previously, developers reported full compatibility with 75% of the console's library, and then began optimizing for devices with ARM chips.

A developer under the nickname Whatcookie discussed the project's current achievements in a YouTube video. He managed to run some PS3 games on the AYN Odin 2 retro console with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and Linux, while the device consumes only about 9.5 W of power.

Although most of the material is devoted to technical details, the main result is impressive: over the past six months, PS3 emulation performance on ARM has reportedly increased by up to 60%.

The next goal for the RPCS3 team is to run games on affordable retro consoles costing less than $100, similar to those currently used for PS2 and Dreamcast emulation.
