Gamers have been observing rising prices for consoles, computers, and components for many months, and the situation could get even worse. According to new data, almost all future memory production capacity is already booked.
Taiwanese publication DigiTimes reported that Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have fully allocated DRAM and HBM production capacity for 2027. This means that the memory to be produced next year is already sold under long-term contracts.
The main reason is the development of AI. Large technology companies and data center operators are purchasing huge volumes of HBM memory, and demand significantly exceeds supply. Some customers are allegedly trying to secure additional supplies by offering higher prices.
The problem could affect ordinary consumers. In 2027, DRAM supplies for PCs, laptops, smartphones, and consoles may decrease, leading to price increases and a possible shortage of certain models.
A difficult situation is also developing with NAND memory for SSDs. Its capacity is still available, but it could be fully reserved by the end of August 2026.
For Sony, Microsoft, and other hardware manufacturers, this is bad news. PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and computers are already becoming more expensive, and further memory shortages could lead to new price increases.
