Mexican authorities commented on the complaint against Sony over its decision to abandon discs

Sony has decided to stop releasing games on discs for PlayStation. This has angered many gamers, and some politicians have reacted to it. For example, in Mexico, authorities filed an official complaint against Sony with the national regulator.

Mexican federal parliament deputy Iraís Reyes and senator Luis Donaldo Colosio recently spoke about the situation. Their claim is that Sony is essentially turning players into "renters," while asking them to "pay like an owner":

We have filed a complaint against Sony with the National Competition Commission. Starting in 2028, PlayStation will stop releasing games on physical media. Its digital store will become the sole distribution channel in Mexico: prices and terms will be unilaterally set by Sony, and users will not be able to resell, lend, or exchange games.

Politicians noted that buying "digitally" means that the product does not belong to the players — it's just a license that can be revoked at any time:

What you buy digitally does not belong to you — it's a license that can be taken away from you. This has already happened in Europe in 2022: it concerned more than 500 films, and the same thing is happening in the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita stores. You pay like an owner, but in reality, you get the rights of a renter.
