Baldur's Gate 3 broke on consoles - seemingly due to a popular modification that was recently removed

Baldur's Gate 3 has official support for user modifications. Fans of Larian Studios can also install mods not only on PC, but selected projects are available on consoles.

Recently, Baldur's Gate 3 broke for some players. This happened shortly after a popular modification was removed from Nexus Mods and mod.io. The author of "Transmogs and Spelltheft" had problems with the community and decided to remove their projects.

Thanks to "Transmogs and Spelltheft", players could "become anyone" — the mod allowed the character to take on the appearance of over a hundred different NPCs.

Now, those who used the mod are concerned about their saves. Some players on PlayStation and Xbox have started experiencing game crashes.

Those who tried to solve the problem by deleting the mod encountered a technical feature of modding Baldur's Gate 3 on consoles. As reported, on consoles, it is not possible to load an old save without all previously used mods:

If you have the mod installed on your PC, everything will most likely be fine: you can uninstall it and still run old saves. On consoles, however, you will be asked to reinstall all mods that were used in that save before you are allowed to load it. You can add mods to a save, but you cannot remove them. Larian implemented this restriction so that newcomers would not accidentally corrupt their saves, but now, unfortunately, it can lead to some playthroughs becoming completely unplayable.

A user under the nickname SecretResort9 played on Xbox and said that he used the "quick resume" function to continue the playthrough — he was already at the finale, so he managed to finish the game without problems.

After "Transmogs and Spelltheft" was removed from the platform, some players still had access to the mod. They will not be able to reinstall it if they disable it, meaning, apparently, they will have to use it in future playthroughs, otherwise access to old files will be lost.
