Michael Mando revealed the origin of his character's image. According to the actor, such an antagonist was not created out of a desire to show an impressive psychopath armed with a machete. The core of the image was the actor's personal experience while working on the role.
Mando said that he loved a woman very much and was loved in return, but he understood that they were not meant to be together. This feeling awakened old memories of his parents' divorce and a difficult childhood. The accumulated emotional burden was poured by the actor into his character.
The actor explained that Vaas was driven by a need for love, but he was unable to allow anyone to love him:
At the heart of Vaas's image was emotional trauma… I loved a woman very deeply, and she reciprocated, but I understood that we were not meant to be together. This made me remember my parents' divorce and how I grew up without a mother… Ultimately, I believe Vaas was driven by a need for love, but he was unable to allow anyone to love him – including himself. This drove him to the edge. Without love, there is no hope… and without hope… a person can turn into a ticking time bomb.
