New disc games will disappear from PlayStation. Sony named the deadline

Sony has officially set the date for the transition to digital format: starting January 2028, new PlayStation games will only be sold digitally.

Sony is preparing for a digital future. Starting January 2028, new PlayStation games will be sold in the PlayStation Store and by retailers only in digital format. Previously released discs will continue to work on consoles with a disc drive.

Now, a corresponding warning has appeared on new PS5 boxes with a disc drive and on PlayStation Direct. It is located next to the consoles and separately sold disc drives:

Starting January 2028, new PlayStation games will be available for purchase in the PlayStation Store and from retailers exclusively in digital format. Game discs released before January 2028 will still be playable on this console.

This is another signal that Sony does not intend to change its decision. The company is already warning buyers that the disc drive of future PS5s will not be used for new releases on physical media.
