The European Union is preparing new rules for packaging that could change the familiar appearance of game boxes. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) aims to reduce waste. In particular, the empty space inside the packaging should not exceed 50% of its volume in many cases.
The rules could also affect the gaming industry, especially publishers who sell large plastic boxes with only a card and an activation code.
For PlayStation, the issue is particularly relevant. Sony recently announced the discontinuation of disc-based games, so future physical editions may only contain download codes. If PPWR comes into force in its current form, Sony may have to release significantly smaller boxes for Europe.
One option could be small cardboard packages, similar to those Microsoft uses to sell Windows keys.
It is not yet known whether Sony, Nintendo, and Xbox will make separate packaging for EU countries. After PPWR comes into force, the familiar appearance of game boxes may change.
