Marvel's Wolverine Developers Explain Why They Ditched Open World in Favor of Marvel's Spider-Man Style

Insomniac Games has already released several successful Marvel's Spider-Man games, where the main characters swung on webs and explored a vast open world. However, in their new project, they decided to take a different approach — Marvel's Wolverine will be a linear game.

In an interview with IGN, game director Mike Daly explained that the developers "didn't set out to make an open-world game or a sandbox," they want to present "a dynamic, exciting linear adventure, and the mission structure reflects that."

Mike explained that when the developers asked themselves "how to make the best Wolverine game that would accurately reflect this character," they thought that Wolverine is a hero who travels a lot around the world and doesn't stay anywhere for long:

He is drawn by the search for the past. He is driven by a sense of duty. Based on this, we decided that an adventure with travel to different countries is the right choice for this game. Logan is not a hero who is tied to one place and spends a lot of time there.

Mike Daly said that players can expect "a dynamic, dense comic-book style story – it's like a roller coaster that takes you from beginning to end":

Important events and key plot twists guide you through all missions. In this sense, what you saw in the gameplay trailer accurately conveys the essence. Logan has a goal and direction, but at the same time, he has the freedom to choose how he will act. Locations provide different paths for completion. Stealth is optional: you can go quietly, or you can immediately engage in combat. You can also explore hidden corners of the world, find different things, and there will be additional content and collectibles along the way.

Marvel's Wolverine is scheduled for release on September 15 this year on PlayStation 5 consoles.
