This summer, Frosty Wren Studios, a one-person development team, released Defense of Kyrath on PC via Steam. It's a tower defense roguelike set in a fantasy world.
Players are invited to place several guardians in enchanted forests, peaceful meadows, and volcanic wastelands. They will face 18 enemies, each with their own weaknesses and resistances to certain attacks:
Brute force won't solve anything here. The Champion ignores arrows and inflicts crippling effects on your guardians. Cinderhoof Cavalry is immune to fire but melts under frost. The Wraith passes through physical attacks. The Bog Matron ensnares guardians with webs right in their positions. The Hedge Witch poisons your defenses. Each wave forces you to rethink your squad composition – and consider vulnerabilities.
The Steam release wasn't very successful. Defense of Kyrath's peak online player count was 2, and in recent weeks, no one has played it at all. As a result, the developer decided to close Frosty Wren Studios and remove the game from sale on Steam. He thanked players for their support:
Thank you to everyone who played, wishlisted, streamed, or messaged me about the game. Fifteen people dedicated many hours to a game I made alone, and that turned out to be more valuable than sales revenue.
