Recently, an experiment by blogger ro0oney1 (@Rooney) went viral in the Minecraft cubic sandbox community. He decided to upload a fly's "brain" into the game and try to place it into the bodies of different creatures.
The model of the adult fruit fly Drosophila's brain itself was presented by scientists several years ago. It includes about 140 thousand neurons and tens of millions of synapses, which were reconstructed from real electron microscopy data. This data is publicly available, and @Rooney used it.
To connect the fly's "brain" to Minecraft, a special Python program was developed that allows understanding neuron signals. As a result, the fly's "brain" ended up in the game. At first, the blogger placed it in a spider's body, but something went wrong. The fly behaved strangely: it walked into the water and died.
Then @Rooney changed his approach and placed the fly's "brain" into a bee's body. After that, it started flying around the map and ignored the blogger's actions when he attacked it.
One of the community members, @groxxeno1202, expressed the opinion that this "fly" most likely sees "incomprehensible gibberish," and its sense of its own body, gravity, etc., do not work correctly:
The visual signal [image] coming from the computer's video card does not correspond to what the fly's brain expects to receive from its own eyes, so whatever information it receives, the brain probably sees only incomprehensible gibberish. The same applies to literally all other senses of the fly: to the sensations of its own body, gravity, inertia, smells, temperature, air humidity (or, rather, to the absence of all this). The thought process is inhibited due to the absence of any regulating hormones or other chemicals, whatever they may be in a fly. The time difference between the fly's reaction speed, the frame rate in Minecraft, and the speed at which your computer can process brain signals probably deprives it of an accurate sense of the passage of time. In turn, this leads to a chaotic set of commands that in no way correspond to the player's input commands when pressing keys on the keyboard.
