Programmer Launched DOOM on a Canon DSLR Camera

News 0

Recently, DOOM fans noticed another example of the game running on an unconventional platform. This time, the legendary shooter was attempted on a Canon DSLR camera.

This model is called the Canon EOS 550D and was released in 2010. The device is equipped with a 3-inch TFT LCD display and also has a DIGIC image processing unit. To run DOOM on such a device, programmer lauris-nl used the Magic Lantern firmware.

It is quite possible to play DOOM on the Canon EOS 550D — the “up”, “down”, “left”, and “right” buttons are used for camera control and navigation, while the “set” button is used for selection and firing. The “Menu” button can open the in-game menu, and the “DISP.” button can be used to go back. This camera has a built-in speaker, allowing sounds to be heard.

The programmer left a warning for those who decide to repeat his experiment. According to him, this DOOM port only works on the Canon EOS 550D with firmware version 1.0.9: “Do not install this binary on another camera model or firmware version.” He did not specify what the problem was.
